Toolkits and education

NITA is committed to supporting local governments as they implement and encourage transit-oriented development (TOD) and transit-friendly policies. TOD encourages mixed-use development by integrating housing, office, retail, parks, and civic uses within a short walking distance of a train station or a bus stop. TOD thereby fosters diverse housing options, retail, cultural destinations, and employment near transit and given the proximity to transit service, supports the use of transit for residents, workers, and visitors. Specifically designed to be pedestrian friendly, areas with TOD have higher rates of walking and cycling trips, helping to increase transit use and reduce the pollution associated with driving personal vehicles.

This section provides additional toolkits and resources for communities looking to improve transit policies.
